BLAST FROM THE PAST with Eifion Williams
YOUR TIME WITH THE CANARIES IS PRETTY LEGENDARY – HOW DID YOU ENJOY IT?
EW: I’ll always have special memories of my time with Caernarfon. The club gave me my first chance in the game
and on top of that Town had a couple of good seasons during that time.
HOW DID YOU COME TO JOIN TOWN?
EW: I was playing in the reserves during the club’s last season in the Unibond League and had managed to get
a few goals so Phil Wilson elevated me into the first team set-up and the rest is history you could say.
HAVING IN PLAYED IN BOTH THE UNIBOND LEAGUE & THE WPL FOR TOWN – DO YOU THINK THE CLUB MADE THE RIGHT SWITCH?
EW: The Unibond was good but I still believe the club made the right decision in moving back to Wales. The English
Pyramid has it benefits but it doesn’t offer the possibility of European football that the WPL can provide you. Plus
another good factor was a number of local derbies with some of the local clubs.
WHAT ARE YOUR MEMORIES OF THE TWO AND A HALF SEASONS AT THE OVAL?
EW: The club was definitely on the up-and-up at that time. Things were going well under John Aspinall and Steve Joel
and we were always up the top end of the table and in my last season we just missed out on a European place.
YOU SCORED MANY GOALS – ANY STICK OUT?
EW: I was fortunate to score over 60 goals in two seasons and to be honest I scored that many I cannot remember them
all. Twice I managed to bag four goals against Rhyl and then I did the same while with Barry too.
HOW DID YOU COME TO LEAVE CAERNARFON?
EW: I wanted to go full-time and Barry Town offered me the chance to do that and obvious the money that Barry offered
Caernarfon was too good to turn down for them so I eventually moved to Jenner Park. I never left on bad terms or nothing like
that it was purely a career move.
HOW HAS YOUR CAREER PANNED OUT SINCE LEAVING THE OVAL?
EW: I had a very similar spell to what I had with Town down at Barry which paved the way for a move to Torquay United.
I did well there but for some strange reason when Roy McFarland was the manager at Plainmoor he didn’t fancy me but
every cloud has a silver lining and a move to Hartlepool United was a breath of fresh air. We’ve had our up’s
and down’s. We were on the brink of the championship a couple of seasons ago but lost in the play-off final and then
the following season we were relegated. However, things are going great guns under Danny Wilson and we’re bang on course
to lift the title in May.
THE BIG QUESTION ON EVERY CANARIES FANS LIPS – WILL YOU WEAR THE COLOURS OF TOWN ONE DAY IN THE FUTURE?
EW: You can never say never in football. I’m more than happy at Hartlepool and I’d like to think I’ve
a few years left in the full time football for a few more seasons yet. My wife and I love the North East but it’s mostly
likely that we’ll return back to Wales when my career is over so you never know.
