All the Welsh Premier clubs compete in the League Cup, which has been staged in various guises and formats since the
inaugural season in 1992/3. First run in group stages, it reverted to a knock-out the following season and has been run in
one or other of those formats since.
It is again played in six groups of three clubs for 2008/9. First round ties
are played on a home and away basis in six regionalised groups. The top team from each group qualifies for the quarter-finals,
along with the two best runners-up.
The semi-finals are played on a two-leg home and away basis.
In the knockout
stages, games are decided by away goals (in two-legged ties), extra-time and a penalty shoot-out if the scores are level.
Prize money The prize fund has been increased to £15,000, with £10,000 going to the winners.
